Nairobi Kenya Marks 25th terrorist attack anniversary

7th August 2023: Kenyans have today marked the 25th Nairobi terrorist attack that happened on 7th August 1998.

When was the Nairobi Terrorist attack?

On August 7, 1998, the AlQaeda terror network conducted a nearly simultaneous bomb attack targeting the American embassies in Nairobi. This also happened in Dar es Salaam, in neighbouring Tanzania.

How many people died during the Nairobi terror attack on 7th August 1998

During the attack in Nairobi on 7th August 1998, 224 people died, and more than 5,000 others suffered injuries. This got into history of the worst terrorist attack in Kenya.

ATPU is formed

After the attack on 7th August 1998, the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) was established, among others, to investigate, prevent, and disrupt terror related cases.

Kenyans preparedness in response to terrorism

On questioning the country’s preparedness to deal with terrorism and violent extremism, the DCI has reassured Kenyans safely as the nation marks 25 years since the attack.

Kenya’s preparedness to respond to terrorism and violent extremism has since then improved tremendously, with the government investing heavily in the training, tooling and equipping of security personnel to respond to this and other emerging security threats.

As the country marks 25 years since this heinous attack, DCI reassures all Kenyans of its commitment to the safety and security of every citizen and calls for the continued partnership with the public, since security is a collective responsibility
