KEBS suspends 5 maize flour brands over high aflatoxin levels

The Kenya Bureau Of Standards (KEBS) has suspended five maize flour brands found to contain excess levels of aflatoxin.

The five include Dola by Kitui Four Mills, Kifaru by Alpha Grain Limited, Starehe by Pan African Grain Millers, 210 Two Ten by Kenblest Limited and Jembe by Kensal Rise Limited.

In a statement issued on Saturday, KEBS announced that the permits of the companies manufacturing the five products had been suspended.

”Consequently, their respective permits have been suspended and the manufacturers instructed to discontinue manufacturing or offering for sale the affected maize meal products,” the statement read.

The standards watchdog also directed the affected manufacturers to recall their products from the markets, also instructing supermarkets and other retail outlets to withdraw the listed products from their shelves.

In their statement, KEBS said the suspension comes following market surveillance and multiple reports from the public.

Earlier in the week, KEBS suspended the licenses of seven peanut butter makers whose products were also found to have high levels of aflatoxins.

They suspended products include; Nuteez by Jetlak Foods Limited, True nuts by Truenutz Kenya, Fressy by Fressy Food Company Limited, Supa meal by Supacosm Products Limited, Sue’s Naturals by Nature’s Way Health, Zesta by Trufoods Limited and Nutty by Nature Target Distributors.
