Activist Okiya Omtata moved to court to challenge the same arguing use of the late president’s image violated the Constitution Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) governor Patrick Njoroge on Monday, June 3, came out to assure Kenyans that the recently unveiled currency notes were designed in accordance with the law.

This came amid heated debate on whether or not the currency was designed in compliance with the Constitution after a section of leaders raised questions on the use of a portrait of the late former president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Addressing journalists in Nairobi, the governor emphasised all the applicable laws were followed to the letter, including public participation, before the new notes were released.

“We have followed all the applicable laws to get to this point, and in terms of the quality of the notes, we have tried listening to the public. We involved the public in the designs of the notes and various features on it. If you recall, the new coins had images depicting our wildlife.
